Let There Be Light

And God said, “Let there be light: and there was light.”

(Genesis 1:3)

The word said H559 in Hebrew means to utter, to say in one’s heart, to think or to command. At the very beginning of creation God didn’t have to speak physical words in order for something to happen; God (Yahweh), who is the Supreme being, could have simply had a thought. Based on that thought, He could command light to come into existence, and in obedience to the word of God, it would have to comply. It’s amazing to know that the Creator of the universe spoke everything into existence.

We all know that light is vital in life for us to see. If we’re speaking of the necessity of sunlight, we know that plants can’t grow without it. Merriam-Webster’s definition of light is something that makes vision possible. This is an understanding of light when we’re speaking of natural things. What is a spiritual understanding of what light means for the believer and follower of Christ?

The word light H216, which is ore in Hebrew, means illumination or light of instruction. In the Ancient Hebrew Lexicon Bible it says, “Light is necessary for order”.

John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” So, we know that God (Jesus) is the Word.

1 John 1:5 says, “This is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.”

The word light used in this verse comes from the Greek word phōs G5457, and it means to shine or make manifest. It also means truth and it’s knowledge, together with the spiritual purity associated with it. God is the Word and He is also the Light. When we recognize who God is by learning of Him through studying the word, then His light shines on us and in us. A major part of our obedience to the Lord is us allowing the light of His word to become illuminated in our lives. This illumination takes place when we see and hear the truth of His word. There are instructions or commands that the Lord wants us to follow so that we can be spiritually refined by Him. The Lord wants us to be purified by the radiance of His light.

Spiritually speaking, as believers we cannot grow or spiritually mature in the faith without God’s light/word in us. Our vision is faulty until we get eyes to see the truth within God’s word. If we’re not walking in the light then that means we’re walking in darkness.

Darkness G4653 in the Hebrew means ignorance, misery, destruction and death.

According to John 10:10, Jesus says that He came so that we might have life and that we may have it more abundantly. We should all have a desire to not only see the light of the Lord but to also experience His light.

Ephesians 5:13

“But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.”
