Without understating the fact, the miracle of vision is quite amazing. It is a process by which photons of light are gathered by our eyes, reflected from forms around us creating inverted images in the retina that are interpreted in our brains to give us visual information which can have a myriad of interpretations and meanings. Among our five senses as human beings, vision is the dominant sense. The occipital lobe of our brain, the smallest of four lobes, is the part of the brain that manages vision. It integrates
“visual processing, distance and depth perception, color determination, object and face recognition and memory formation”. (1)
As with other parts of the brain the occipital lobe is subject to dysfunction due to trauma, strokes, cancer, seizures, infections and other ailments.
What might this be saying spiritually? To understand the spiritual we must first understand the meaning of the natural (ref. Rom 1:20, 1Cor 15:46) So, I wonder when the Bible records a story of a blind man that Jesus healed (which was done in two stages) the blind man after the first touch said,
“I see men as trees, walking”.
(ref. Mark 8:24)
Interesting. I’m curious. Did he have sight at one time to know what trees looked like? How did he lose his sight? Did he have a brain tumor or did he fall out of a tree and traumatized his occipital lobe reducing his life to begging? I don’t know. The how is not recorded in the scriptures.
A common perception in the culture of that time was if someone was born blind for example it was because he was a sinner or his parents were sinners and God was judging him with blindness (ref. John 9:2). But why the statement “men as trees” ? The psalmist David wrote of the godly man that
“he will be like a tree firmly planted [and fed] by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season; Its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers [and comes to maturity].
David, himself a prophet, was referencing Jerimiah the prophet [ref. Jer 17:7-8] and John the disciple and prophet of Jesus recorded in the book of Revelation the prophecy by Jesus were John was shown “on either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. (ref. Rev 22:2)[Gen 2:9; Gen 3:22].
It is clear that more than healing the physical blindness, there is a healing that’s not of the physical eyes that Jesus wants to heal (ref. Matt 13:15). In the story of blind Bartimaus, whose name means son of the unclean, he cries out to the Son of David (Jesus) to receive his sight which was granted when “Jesus said to him,
“Go; your faith [and confident trust in My power] has made you well.”
Immediately he regained his sight and began following Jesus on the road. (ref. Mark 10:46-52). When minds and the hearts are blind it is a defect in the soul that Christ (The Anointed One) wants to heal by engrafting Himself into our souls. The Amplified Version of the Bible puts it so beautifully:
“So get rid of all uncleanness and all that remains of wickedness, and with a humble spirit receive the word [of God] which is implanted [actually rooted in your heart], which is able to save your souls”. (James 1:21).
Remember, Bartimaeus means son of the unclean! Here at VOH ministries, under the anointed teaching of apostle Michael Petro, there is lots of washing of the soul (ref. Eph 5:26) happening and we are witnessing and experiencing personal and corporate transformation as the power of Christ heals brain tumors, skin cancers, dyslexia, scoliosis, spina bifida, PTSD, depression, drug addictions, chronic arthritis, the casting out of demons, the raising of the dead and a host of other “signs” that are following “he who believed and has been baptized” (ref. Mark 16:16-18) like Jesus with the “Holy Spirit and with power”; initiated into the “mystery” of Christ (ref. 1Cor 2:7, Col 1:27, Eph 3:4 & 5). When the soul is cleansed we see all three levels of our being restored; spirit, soul and body (ref. 1Tess 5:23). The WORD tells us we will do what Jesus did because we are anointed or “Christed” and will be perfected as He. (ref. Acts 10:38, 1John 4:17).
The time for the “greater works” than Jesus did is beginning “in earth as it is in heaven” (ref. John 14:12, Matt 6:10): that is when blind souls see.
